Norton Cornet Review

Renown Australian Cornetist, conductor and brass music educator Mr.Jason Mears previews the new Norton International cornet outfit

Mr. Mears conducts Darebin Brass Band (Vic) and is head of brass for the prestigious Mazenod College. Norton International as always

strive to maintain their profile in education and community music. When considering a new instrument we believe this information will

        assist with the process.

The Cornet is easy blowing through all registers and very responsive, which is perfect for any student. Even at the louder dynamics, it was free and easy which is essential for any student to produce a good sound. The tonal quality of the Norton Cornet is a little bright in timbre, however if played with the mouthpiece supplied, it gives a much darker sound.

The intonation overall is excellent with no major problems. Below the stave, the intonation was secure. The middle register was solid with the traditional problems at the lower end of the stave, with C# and D being sharp. At the upper end of the stave, D# and F# was flat. Above the stave up to top C was secure, except for the top A being sharp.

The Spring Mono Monel valves are nice and clean, and have an excellent feel to them. The slides are very good and are easy to adjust. It comes with triggers on both the 1st and 3rd valves, which is a bonus for any student model cornet. The instrument is available in Silver or Lacquered finish, and comes with an excellent hard wearing case with plenty of padding to protect the cornet. There is room to fit two mutes plus a compartment to store music. The cornet also comes with a cleaning coth, value oil lyre and mouthpiece. There is a strap that can be attached to the case so you can carry it on your back - handy for students who catch public transport.

Norton International has produced a fine student model cornet that offers a great deal for little outlay.

News Spot

Norton International recently were fortunate to have Mr. Wayne Bowden assess the Norton 4 valve Euphonium. In Australia and New Zealand Wayne is recognised as a brilliant performer and music educator on both euphonium and trombone. Culmination of over 25 years of brass tuition and guidance in one of Australia's elite private schools Norton International value his comments and believe they should provide encouragement to student players wishing to play and own their own Euphonium.

Wayne's comments were as he paced the instrument through the harmonic series that the 6th harmonic was nicely in tune and the upper F & G were most acceptable in intonation. Usually these particular notes can be a problem on the euphonium to play in tune. The performance so far had indicated a bright middle to high register with the high E being easily obtained. The low register proved to be able to bring some of the darker tonality one finds in the more melodic and slower passages of the euphonium repertoire. The pedal notes produced were very tuneful notes using non compensating fingerings.

The overall intonation is "terrific" in the words of Wayne and his remarks were again positive with regard to maintaining overall control for fortissimo and pianissimo playing. Wayne's capacity to bring about a diminuendo from the forte on a long note is a remarkable treatise in air control but our Norton instrument was compliant with the musicians demands. The valve action was nice and clean and the overall result was light and free blowing. Our introduction to the Norton Euphonium afforded Wayne Bowden the opportunity to play, overview all aspects such as a case design that has incorporated carriage wheels. The mouthpiece  is provided at student  level with an overall finish  and warranty which brings you a great instrument for a modest outlay

Mr Wayne Bowden

Once again Norton International have attended the Maryborough Music Education Conference displaying the latest developments with a new instrument range.     This year the latest 4 valve euphonium and bass clarinet were a feature. This conference enables not only music educators to view our products but attending students as well as our important dealers from Queensland who have embraced our product. This is most relevant as we rely on dealers support with Norton instruments as representing positive acceptance and reliability. The conference was again well attended with a complete and varied program of music education with many presenters covering orchestra, band, strings, choral and classroom formats.

Norton Display Maryborough 2007

Renown Sydney saxophonist and arranger Andrew Robertson picked up the Norton student Alto saxophone at the conference and was             amazed at the responses that such a sax at student price produced. He decided to try it out on a gig that night at one of the conference     functions with a hot R&B band called Soul D Out. The instrument had been on the road for four days with the freight co. displayed for two days. Andrews response was this is a great horn for any student or even pro. without any setup just straight out of the case. Wow!

Andrew Robertson Gigs on Norton Alto sax

Andrew commented on the solid construction and good intonation through the octaves and in his words "have no qualms suggesting that this is a worthy saxophone for the student considering a new instrument". Also local trumpet player Ben Beavis recently returned from a stint on the cruise ships and dropped by to check out the Norton Bb student trumpet. Ben took the instrument out the back of the Brolga theatre and returned later saying the instrument performed well and could certainly be recommended. Thanks to all the muso's who visited the Norton International stand for your comments and input.
